SNUFFLES
Snuffles digs cute little vertical, conical holes, just the right shape for his long nose to poke ino, as he looks for insects and other tasty things. He digs the holes with his front feet. When he is not digging, he wanders about sniffing the ground and making a squeaky little grunt which is a bit like a sharp sneeze. It's probably the way he gets the tickling dirt from out of his nose. You'll find Long-nosed Bandicoots up and down the east coast of Australia, although they are not as common in urban areas as they used to be. They live in a variety of habitats, ranging from rainforest to dry woodlands. Snuffles sleeps in a little nest in a shallow hole in the ground. He scrapes together leaves and grass to line the nest and usually puts some dirt on top so he can hide away and not be seen. The female have from 1 to 5 babies. When born they are only 13 mm long. They stay attached to a nipple in a little backward opening pouch. But they grow quickly and are usually off to make their own life after a couple of months. Snuffles is not very shy, and often comes quite close if you sit very still. |
