Watcher
the giant Perentie sat quietly peeping through the forest grass.
The only movement he made was the occasional flick of his tongue
as he tested the air.
Even though
he was as long as a man, he was not easy to see because his skin
was the colour and pattern of the forest rocks. Watcher wanted
to go down to the waterhole by the creek.
He moved quietly
to another rock. But he would not move any closer antil he was sure
that he was alone. His long neck allowed him to look around. If
he saw anything move he would lie flat and still.
But the forest
was very quiet and Watcher moved down to the edge of the water.
He sat on a warm rock ledge and looked around cautiously. In the
water he saw a reflection of himself.
