The SECRET GULLY Project Secret Gully is a beautiful valley hidden in Australia's Great Dividing Range to the west of Byron Bay. Over the years its unique range of Australian wildlife has been the inspiration for a well loved series of stories, written and narrated by musician and writer Peter Harris and broadcast across Australia on ABC national radio. The stories concern the life and habits of the rather eccentric inhabitants of Secret Gully, from the lowly ants to the ancient goannas and mobile wallabies. Some years ago a small group of enthusiasts met to develop a program for children with the simple theme of preserving our amazing Australian wildlife and caring for each other - and the Secret Gully Project was born. The adults involved in the planning of Secret Gully have raised children of their own and careful thought has gone into the spirit of the project. Against current trends, Secret Gully is gentle and calming. The stories do not contain villians or over dramatic plots where good versus evil and the like. Instead the stories concern the everyday lives of the creatures and encourage children to value the world and each other. We designed our beautiful soft toys to capture the spirit of the wildlife, whilst having an endearing character for wonderful imaginative play. Most of them are interacive with puppetry features while retaining a cuddly full soft stuffed toy structure. We also design our own beautiful materials which are specially woven for us. Our toys are now hand made in an ethical small family factory in China, where uneducated mothers are trained and employed. They in turn are then able to pay for their own childrens' education. The Secret Gully website is regularly added to, offering a range of ideas, information and fun things to do.We hope you find the Secret Gully project enriching and fun. Please tell your friends and visit the site regularly! |
